The canoe route area has a unique logging history dating back to the early 1920's. evidence of the old logging practices can still be found along the route. The area also supports several active logging operations and serves as a good example of the Ministry of Forests' policy of integrated management.
The main route traverses 8 lakes, although that number can jump to 12 if smaller lakes are explored. The portages range in length from 0.7 km to 2.4 km while paddling routes vary from 1.0 km to 28.5 km. There is a total of 80 km of canoeing and 8 km of portaging, which at a leisurely pace, takes approximately 5 days to complete.

The preferred time to travel the Canoe Route is between April and November. During the winter months the higher lakes are frozen and the roads become inaccessible. The route may be circumnavigated in either direction; however, in order to avoid adverse grades when portaging, the preferred direction is Lois Lake to Powell Lake.
