Desolation Sound Marine Park

A diverse area at the confluence of Malaspina Inlet and Homfray Channel with more than 5,666 hectares of upland and 2,570 hectares of foreshore and water, Desolation Sound is BC’s largest marine park. Several offshore islands and a gradually rising upland that contains a number of lakes, waterways and waterfalls are added attractions that beckon to kayakers, boaters and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Desolation Sound has warm, sheltered water and some of the most stunning scenery on the coast. Set back from the park to the north, east and south are the snowcapped peaks of the Coast Mountains that soar to heights of more than 2,400 meters.

The waters of the park

The waters of the park and surrounding area teem with sealife and are among the warmest along the coast, making them very popular for swimming and scuba diving. Kayakers frequently spot seals and black bears rummaging along the shoreline.

Copeland Islands, known locally as the Ragged Islands, is a 437 hectare marine park. It boasts bountiful marine gardens and a diverse range of wildlife, including harbor seals. It’s an easy day trip from the government launch at Lund.
