Boer War

The Boer War was the first foreign conflict in which Lethbridge residents became involved. As a member of the British Empire, Canada was asked to contribute to Britain’s war effort in South Africa, and men from Lethbridge were among the Canadians who responded to Britain’s call. The first contingent of men left Lethbridge on January 14, 1900. By the end of the war, approximately 21 men from Lethbridge had gone to fight in South Africa. Though this figure seems small, it should be remembered that the city's population at the time was only 2500. Lethbridge's participation in the Boer War was the city’s first contribution to Canada's military endeavors overseas.
