LOUIS KOENIG
Louis Koenig, mate on a ship
in the French Marine Nationale left the port of Granville, in
France, the 1st of May 1886 on the Ibis for a campaign
of support to the French fishery in Newfoundland and on the Grand
Banks. On his return he published in the review Le Tour du
monde a narration of the voyage pertaining principally to
the French settlements of White Bay and of Petit Nord (the Great
Northern Peninsula). At the end of the narration he arrives at
Red Island:
Red
Island, situated along the Port au Port Peninsula is one of the
more important locations of the French Shore fishing. At the time
of the drawing of lots the sailors covet it ardently because it
is very produtive. The fish is abundant there and yet the bad
weather is frequent. It is at times very difficult for the cruisers
to communicate with the fishermen of the island.
The
low point where the fish is prepared is often invaded by the sea.
At the end of the season the small boats are hoisted to the summit
of the island to rest among the capstans.
