MIKE
LAINEY
Born
in Mainland on December 28th of 1950, Mike Lainey is
one of 13 children. He
began to draw at the age of 15, using chalk and pastel crayon.
He had always been
interested in art, which is why he began to paint. He believes
that he has been tremendously
influenced by his father. At first, his favourite topics to paint
came from photos of
landscapes that he found in books, or images right out of his
dreams.
Today
he specializes in paintings of landscape and water. He loves his
part of the world
(Mainland) and he delights in capturing the beauty of the community
on canvas. Many
people who see his work ask him to do paintings of personal photos
and he thinks
of attempting portraits very soon. Also, local business people
ask him for paintings either
to award as prizes in draws or to decorate the walls of their
premises.
The
Red Island Heritage Group and the PEDA offer to show his paintings
at the annual
Fall Fair and every summer, he is requested to show his works
at the summer festival at
Cape St. George. There are always paintings available at the Red
Island Heritage office where
visitors can buy them or admire his exceptional work. They are
also displayed in local convenient
stores in the province as well as the province of Prince Edward
Island.
Mike
has more than one string to his bow. As well as being an artist,
he writes short stories
and composes his own songs. He also plays the guitar and enjoys
gardening. He
has built a small gallery (12 ft x 36 ft) at Mainland which he
hopes to open next summer
where he will display his paintings as well as the talents of
others. He has named his gallery
"Island Studio".
