to the Teacher's Corner! The
following lesson plans have been developed to provide teachers with
interesting and relevant resources to supplement regular teaching
materials for the classroom. These exercises are
designed to meet the objectives of the revised 1999 (September) Social
Sciences Curriculum, developed by the BC Ministry of Education. In
particular, they focus on the curriculum goals for encouraging critical
thinking in students, developing an historical perspective and a stronger
awareness of community.
These lesson
plans can be printed off easily for use in the classroom. We suggest
referring students to the Student's
Corner as an opportunity for them to utilize and become familiar
with internet resources, and to learn about the history of St. Ann's
convent and heritage building. The lesson plans are intended to
incorporate the St. Ann's website and history into the larger goals
for curriculum learning outcomes. If you are planning a school
visit to St. Ann's, the Student
Corner is also an effective way to prepare students with some
information and activities beforehand.
In
addition to these lessons, there are a number of games and activities
throughout the St. Ann's website. The wordsearch
can be printed off and given to students to complete in the classroom
to familiarize them with St. Ann's Academy. The treasure
hunt is an ideal activities for students to do on the computer
to learn about the site. Please visit the Student
Corner to see additional activities that can be used in conjunction
with lesson plans. The apple icon which is also found throughout
the website indicates a link to an activity or game.

The exercises
are based upon information in the St. Ann's website and are aimed
at kids of all ages. At the end of each lesson plan, you will find
a link to the area of the website which relates to that particular
lesson. Some activities also encourage students to draw upon a variety
of other resources. While the lessons are directed towards the curriculum
objectives for grades 5 and 10, teachers may also find them useful
for other grade levels. There are also a number of games
and activities directed to kids of all ages. In addition, there
is a section describing
how this site was created and how someone can create their own site.
Students will have an opportunity to learn how technology can be
used as an information resource.
The Catholic
Encyclopaedia is an online resource that may help with any questions
pertaining to the Catholic faith. The site contains over 11,000
entries on Catholic scholarship, history and beliefs, and is based
on volumes of books, collected and published in 1907. At the top
of the screen, the letters of the alphabet are set up as links.
All of the articles that begin with that letter are listed on another
page, which in turn has links to the entries themselves. As an example,
if one were to search for more information on St. Anne, they would
begin by clicking on "A", scrolling down the list to "Anne, St",
and selecting that entry. The entry includes an explanation of who
she is and information such as the fact that she is the principal
patron of the province of Quebec. The site, at http://www.newadvent.org/
is concise and simple to use.
