The year 2004 marks the 400th anniversary of French settlement in North
America. For generations, French culture has taken root across Canada
and in the United States. Today these two nations boast a vibrant Acadian
population and well over
16 million people of French descent. More than half of whom have French
as their mother tongue.
We invite you to visit Saint Croix Island International Historic Site,
operated by the United States National Park Service and located south
of Calais in Maine. We also encourage you to explore the Bayside settlement
near the town of St. Andrews in New Brunswick. Both sites flank the Saint
Croix river, which separates Canada and the United States. You may further
explore the fascinating history of Acadia by visiting other national historic
sites throughout the region.
Plan to visit New Brunswick in 2004, when the world
will mark the anniversary of Saint Croix in grand style, with a full slate
of events throughout the Saint Croix region. Be sure to join us for the
celebration as we commemorate this significant event!
