The Saint Croix Island village was fortified with palisades and the buildings were lined up along a crossroad in the centre. The architecture is an example of one of the first European influences in North America. Click on this drawing by Samuel de Champlain to learn more about the architecture of the period.

The "Old World" met the "New World" with the intent to settle and advance European tradition. The French brought certain practicalities with them, and the North American specimens they returned to France proved to be of great interest. Click on the blue jay to see more specimens.
