THE BAKE-HOUSE WHERE THE BREAD WAS MADE The bake-house was probably the smallest building in the village, likely no more than eight feet high. It was located in the southeastern corner of the village, with a door that opened to the outside of the palisade and onto a small path leading toward the cook-house. The structure had a simple architecture, with two windows on the southwest side and a window in the gable above the door. The chimney was located at the back of the building. It was the first known bakery in North America. This suggests that one or more bakers were included in the expedition. Return to previous page |
