THE BLACKSMITH SHOP The blacksmith shop is the first building in a series of four, all constructed in the same design. The three others were the "carpenters' dwelling." Champlain shows us the west side of the blacksmith shop, which had two upper windows and a smoking chimney on the roof. The façade seems to show a tall building with a door in the centre, two windows side by side in the upper storey, and two windows within the gable. CARPENTERS' DWELLING The carpenters' houses consisted, along with the blacksmith shop, of four buildings attached to one another and each having a chimney. Judging by the height of the doors, these buildings would have been about 12 feet high, with four windows set high in the façade. In a symmetrical fashion, two of the buildings had two windows on the square, and two more set one above the other in the centre of the gable. The other two buildings had only one window on the square, located in the centre over the door, and the other three were arranged in a triangle in the gable. There was an ornament, possibly made of metal, on the gable in the front of the building. The top of the doors appears to have been semi-circular. It is not known how many carpenters de Mons brought with him to build these structures, but judging by the housing provided for them, they must have been numerous. Return to previous page |
