THE DWELLING OF THE SWISS This "large and spacious" building had two broad chimneys. The façade was on the south side, with a door in the southeast corner and four upper windows. On the east side, there were two lower windows and one window on the upper level. According to Marc Lescarbot, "outside of the fort was the lodging of the Swiss, large and spacious". This building, however, was really inside the palisade, and according to Champlain's drawing, it was next to the storehouse. Nothing is known about these men's occupation or how they were hired, though they no doubt came from Switzerland. Were they workmen? Or soldiers? Return to previous page |
