Group of Seven member Arthur Lismer was an art teacher as well as an international pioneer in child art. He was very much influenced by the ideas of Franz Cizek who believed that children could express their experience through drawing and painting.

Lismer invited Anne Savage to show her students' work in an art show that he was organising of children's paintings. He was impressed with the quality of the work, and the two began a professional relationship with the goal of bringing the experience of art to children.

Savage was at the forefront of a new era in art education. Ideas like those of Cizek were new and exciting. Previously art education was the teaching of geometric drawing, which left little room for self-expression in children's art.
