A.S. Note, n.d. Anne Savage Archives

The notes and scrapbooks found in the Anne Savage Archives give us clues to her pedagogical ideas and themes of instruction. An example of the questions she asked her students can be seen here. They leave us with a glimpse of what fascinating discussions might have ensued.

Examples of her notes and quotations from writers on art education, like these, tell us that she found successful methods of teaching and then found theories to support them. Her instructional ideas and her own painting concerns were linked.

Not the production of art, but the unfolding of the purposeless creative instinct, is the fundamental function of art education in school.
