In 1834, while on the company's ship, the Prince Rupert, he met and fell in love with a young Welsh woman named Eliza Waugh who had come to Canada as a servant to a missionary and his wife. He and Eliza were married in London, and then visited John's family in Scotland. They then returned to Canada where they visited friends in Montreal and had a lovely holiday. After returning to work, the Tods moved around to many different posts. The company wanted to send Tod to Saskatchewan, but it would have been too difficult a journey for Eliza, who was pregnant. On December 3, 1835, she gave birth to Emmeline Jane, who was, as Tod wrote to Edward Ermatinger, "a fine, healthy child."
Unfortunately, Eliza began showing symptoms of a mental illness and Tod decided to return to England with her. She showed signs of improvement, so the trip was postponed and the couple stayed at Oxford House for the winter. However, Eliza soon became so violent and uncontrollable that no one would help Tod take care of her, and they couldn't leave for England until spring. After arriving in Britain, John planned to leave Eliza and Emma with her relatives in Wales. But Eliza's mother was unable to care for her sick daughter as well as a baby, so John took his daughter back to Canada and left her in the care of his relatives, the Greenshields, in Montreal. After Mrs. Waugh was no longer able to care for her daughter, Eliza was sent to a private asylum at Tod's expense. Eventually, she was moved (at Tod's request) to a publicly funded asylum. She died there on May 12, 1857.
