John Tod had no other permanent romantic attachments until 1842, when he was at Fort Kamloops.

In 1842, Tod began a country marriage with Sophia Lolo, a First Nations woman. She was 16 or 17 years old at the time, while Tod was 49. She may have been the daughter of John Baptiste Lolo, a respected interpreter with the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Kamloops. They had their first child, a daughter Mary, in 1843.

During their long relationship, Sophia would give birth to seven children, and be a loyal companion to John Tod. She and the children would travel with him on the difficult route to Fort Langley in 1849, and settle in Victoria when he retired from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1850. Sophia and John officially married on August 17, 1863, after 20 years together.

Their wedding took place shortly before the marriage of their daughter Mary. Sophia died on February 8, 1883, aged 57 years, less than one year after her husband.
