How do I apply for funding?

While most of Infrastructure Canada's application-based programs are fully subscribed, some funding may remain under the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada Fund in some provinces.

Projects funded under the BCF-MIC are selected through Federal/Provincial negotiations. If you are interested in requesting funding under this program, which targets larger-scale infrastructure that will have a national and/or regional impact, you should contact your provincial ministry in charge of infrastructure.

In some provinces and territories, funds from the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund program may also still be available. Under this fund, money is contributed directly to the province or territory, which is then responsible for identifying infrastructure priorities and distributing funds directly to initiatives according to categories established by the federal government.

Infrastructure Canada also provides $2 billion per year in funding to municipalities across Canada through the Gas Tax Fund. Municipalities receive their share based on a per capita formula and can use this funding to support environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure. Through legislation, the Government of Canada has made this a permanent annual investment of $2 billion.

Contact your municipality to find out what projects are underway or planned in your area under the Gas Tax Fund, or to discuss potential funding for your project.

To note, no new applications are being considered for the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component, the Green Infrastructure Fund, or the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, as well as older programs such as the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund, the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, and the Infrastructure Canada Program.

How can I find out what is funded in my community?

Infrastructure Canada leads federal efforts to ensure that Canadians benefit from world-class, modern public infrastructure. We achieve this by making investments, building partnerships, developing policies, delivering programs and fostering knowledge.

The department is a key funding partner, working with provinces, territories, municipalities, the private sector and non-profit organizations, along with other federal departments and agencies to help build and revitalize the infrastructure Canadians need and use every day.

This website is the one-stop-shop for information about the department, its programs and results. For information about what the department has helped fund in your community, please visit the following provincial-territorial pages:

You can also visit the Media Centre at Infrastructure Canada to browse news releases by year to identify specific federal announcements for projects in your region.

I have a question about an Infrastructure Canada funded project in my community, who should I speak to?

Infrastructure Canada leads the Government of Canada's efforts to enhance Canada's public infrastructure through strategic investments, key partnerships, sound policies and practical research.

While Infrastructure Canada takes part in negotiating funding agreements with the provincial and municipal governments and allocates funds based on these agreements, projects funded are not assets of the federal government. Therefore, Infrastructure Canada is not responsible for the day-to-day management of projects benefitting from any of our funding programs.

Most concerns directly related to a project should be communicated to the project proponent – i.e. the province, municipality or organization that is receiving funding.

If you are not certain who the recipient of funding is, please contact us with your question and we will try to help redirect you:

What funding will be available in the future?

While the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund ended on October 31, 2011, the Building Canada Plan is in place until 2014, and includes funding such as the full GST rebate for municipalities, the Building Canada Fund, the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, the P3 Fund, and the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund. It also includes the Gas Tax Fund, which provides predictable, long-term infrastructure funding for municipalities. Through legislation, the Government of Canada has made this a permanent annual investment of $2 billion.

In Budget 2011, the Government of Canada also committed to working with provinces, territories, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and other stakeholders to develop a long-term plan for public infrastructure that extends beyond the expiry of the Building Canada Plan.
