CFIA President

The President is the chief executive officer of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and, as such, supervises its direction and its staff. The President has the rank, and all the powers, of a deputy head of a federal government department.

President

George Da Pont was appointed President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) effective July 11, 2011.

As President of the CFIA, Mr. Da Pont is responsible for carrying out the Agency's mission, which is to safeguard food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy.

Mr. Da Pont joined the CFIA as its Executive Vice-President in June 2010.

Before joining the Agency, Mr. Da Pont was the Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, a position he held from December 2005.

Mr. Da Pont began his public service career with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. He has held a variety of senior positions in other federal government organizations, including the Privy Council Office and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Mr. Da Pont holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science and a Master of Arts degree in History, both from the University of Saskatchewan.
