Sometimes it is the publisher (the company who prints the books), that chooses who should make the pictures for a book.
For the Zoom books, it was the author who chose. Tim wrote the first book with a friend in mind. This friend was an artist with paintings in a gallery. His name was Ken Nutt.
Tim wrote the story and then showed it to his friend Ken. Ken didn't know much about illustrating children's books, but he agreed to read the story.
He liked the story so much he decided to try to draw the pictures for it.
"As I read it all sorts of pictures came to mind, and I decided I would try my hand at illustration." (CCL, 48, 1987, p. 57)

"Although we hardly ever talked about the books, or saw each other, Eric and I worked incredibly well together, almost as if we were sharing one brain!"
(Tim Wynne-Jones in a letter written for the site) |
Ken made up his mind that when he creates pictures for children's books, he uses the name Eric Beddows. Eric is his middle name, and Beddows is his mother's maiden name. When he creates pictures for an art gallery, he uses his real name, Ken Nutt.
"Eric and Ken are both me, but me drawing different things from different viewpoints."
("Nutt Repeats Win for Illustrator's Award", CLJ, Oct. 1986, p. 341)
