Before a book is printed, a publisher has to agree to publish it. The Zoom books were published by Groundwood Books, a division of Douglas & McIntyre. While Eric was busy working on the illustrations, there was a whole team at work in the offices of Groundwood Books.

An editor is given the job of looking at the text and suggesting possible changes. He or she may also ask to see some of the early drawings to see how they are coming along. Patsy Aldano was the publisher and editor for the three Zoom books.

"The first Zoom was quite long in my original telling. Patsy Aldana suggested a lot of cutting to make it into a picture book rather than a story book. She was completely right. Eric's pictures tell so much of the story that you don't need many words."

(Tim Wynne-Jones in a letter written for the site)

A person called a book designer is chosen to help make the book. The designer's job is to put all the different parts of a book together and decide how it will look.

The designer thinks about the cover, the inside of the cover, and all the other pages of the book. The designer will choose what kind of lettering is used on every page of the book, and how the pictures and the writing will be placed on each page.

For all the Zoom books, Michael Solomon was the book designer. Eric helped Michael with the designing. It was Eric who drew the picture that would go on the cover. Eric tried out different ideas to see how the cover might look.
