Backgrounds (cont'd)

"I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. Everyone – my parents, teachers and friends – encouraged me. I was always the kid who drew."

("Eric Beddows [Ken Nutt]". Share Our Story. Canadian Multicultural Books for Young People. Canadian Children's Book Centre, 1988.)

Eric's Drawing Tips

In the final sketches, Eric sometimes likes to smudge some areas to give a softened look. Sometimes he uses a kleenex, sometimes an artist's tool called a smudger.

When all the drawings are finished for the whole book, they are sent to the publisher who gets them ready for printing. This is the hardest time of all for Eric because he must wait to see how it is all going to look as a printed book.

When Eric sent all his final illustrations off to the publisher for Zoom Upstream, he sent along a note with this sketch on it. It shows Zoom carrying a box full of illustrations for Zoom Upstream. Sketch of Zoom carrying box
