FUNDING FOR POETS IN THE SCHOOLS STILL AVAILABLE
***Particularly the Northern Schools program***
Funding is still available for school visits throughout Ontario. We are hoping that members who participate in the program will consider booking a tour to visit schools in Northern Ontario. For Northern Ontario schools the League subsidized the full cost of the poet’s fee ($300 for full day, $200 for half day) and reimburses all travel and accommodation expenses when the author visits a minimum of three schools within the same region. Exceptions can be made for remote schools (e.g. two days in one school, one day in another school.) Please see program details here click here.

PAT LOWTHER AND GERALD LAMPERT MEMORIAL AWARDS
We are now accepting submissions for our annual book awards for titles published in 2006. The Pat Lowther Memorial Award is given for a book of poetry by a Canadian woman published in the preceding year, and is in memory of the late Pat Lowther, whose career was cut short by her untimely death in 1975. The Gerald Lampert Memorial Award is given in the memory of Gerald Lampert, an arts administrator who organized authors' tours and took a particular interest in the work of new writers. The award recognizes the best first book of poetry published by a Canadian in the preceding year. Both awards carry a $1,000 prize, and are presented each year at the League's Annual General Meeting in June, with the shortlist announced during National Poetry Month in April. The deadline for submission to these awards is November 1st, 2006. For books that are published after this date, but still within the calendar year, please e-mail me by Nov 1st, 2006 to arrange to have the deadline extended (to Dec 15th at the latest). If you are a League member, please contact your publisher to see if your title has been submitted before sending it in yourself to avoid duplication. For more information on these awards, and to download a submission form, please click here.

“WOMEN POETS IN CANADIAN HISTORY”
AGM SESSION, LCP FEMINIST CAUCUS
Deadline: November 15, 2006. To help celebrate 25 years as part of The League of Canadian Poets, the Feminist Caucus invites proposals for 10-15 minute presentations for a session on "Women Poets in Canadian History", to be held at the League's AGM in Edmonton in June 2007.
The presentation can take whatever form you like -- prose, poetry, performance, etc. -- but should address women poets/poems published before 1950.
You could propose to present on an early poet (i.e. Pauline Johnson as performance poet). Or you could adopt a poet: who are your early mentors? Or you could rescue an unknown voice and present her to a contemporary audience. Has an early Canadian poet ever possessed you, called you to respond? Talk back, take on her persona and perform your/her poetry.
Some early fore-mothers (and their poetry) from the 19th century are listed on the National Archives Website click here.
The proposal should be around 200 words long, and sent to <kathymac@stu.ca> in the body of an e-mail (no attachments, please), or mailed to: Kathy Mac and Jennifer Boire, co/ Department of English, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, NB E3B 2W6 |
