Honouring the Voices of Canada's Soul
"Poetry is the innermost core of language.
It's where words are honed and reforged.
That's why it's sharp and hot."
- Margaret Atwood
Our poets paint a portrait of what it is to live in the Canadian wilderness, the urban centres and small towns in between. Poets tell the stories of coping with changing economic and personal realities. Their words convey the wisdom, the glory and pain of living, loving and dying. Their words colour our internal and external landscapes "Canadian."
The goal of the League of Canadian Poets is to generate a wider audience for our vibrant poets and poetry - here at home, especially among young people, and beyond our borders. With the support of visionary donors, the League can do still more.
Here's how you can help.
1. Join the poets' circle
Keep the circle turning
With your help, we can continue to operate from day to day:
- making National Poetry Month in Canada a growing success
- supporting hundreds of events year-round, clear across the country
- offering the Poetic Licence Contest for Canadian Youth, and continuing with our educational programming for teachers and students on www.youngpoets.ca.
- presenting annual poetry awards and helping recognize excellence in poetry.
- connecting readers with Canadian poetry books through our unique Poetry Spoken Here webstore.
Build our endowment fund
With your help, we can continue building our Endowment Fund, which is administered by the Ontario Arts Council Foundation. The Endowment Fund will continue to ensure the sustainability of the League, so that we can continue to successfully promote Canadian poetry.
Donations may be earmarked to specific support. For example, previous donations to the endowment fund provides stable funding for the annual Anne Szumigalski Lecture on Canadian Poetry.
2. Keep the circle green
Donations sustain this archive of donations in memory of people who have contributed to building Canada's poetry community. Visit our archive here.
