We are planning to have small group problem-solving sessions at this year’s WILU! Do you have a nagging library instructional “problem” that you’d like to discuss with colleagues? Please post your suggested topics in the comments of this page.
Many people have been asking about registration fees. We are still working on setting up the registration, but plan to have the fees comparable to previous WILUs at around $300Cdn. And have a look under the Accommodations tab for further info on cost of the UofR residences. Check back in the coming weeks for Program details and Registration!

We have reserved enough space in residences on the University of Regina campus to accommodate all delegates participating in WILU 2011. This is following WILU tradition to provide a reasonably-priced, and more intimate, conference experience.
However, some delegates my choose to stay at nearby hotels instead. We have reserved blocks of rooms at special conference rates in three hotels. See the Accommodations tab for details!
We are very excited to announce the opening and closing keynote speakers for WILU 2011:
Opening Keynote:
Brian Thwaits is known as the “Brain Trainer”. He is a former educator with over 25 years of teaching and training experience in both the public and private sectors, he began his career by winning a national student award at Lakehead University and concluded it by receiving the President’s Award for Excellence from Mohawk College for his work both at the institution and in the community. He has appeared in various media and is the author of The Big Learn: Smart Ways to Use Your Brain. Thousands of people in countless audiences have experienced Brian’s unique and thought-provoking take on how we use our heads. His sessions cleverly combine the latest information from the disciplines of brain research, learning theory and the communication field to suggest innovative and practical approaches to issues we face daily in the workplace, in the classroom, and in our personal lives.
Closing Keynote:
David Bouchard is a Canadian Métis author and literacy advocate and has produced more than fifty books for readers of all ages, including two guides on reading for parents and educators. An erstwhile teacher and school principal, he is particularly concerned with Aboriginal-related issues and is a sought-after speaker for conference keynotes and school presentations and on topics of reading, literacy and aboriginal well-being. In April 2009, Bouchard was named as a Member of the Order of Canada “for his contributions as an author of children’s books and an advocate who has championed the cause of reading and writing, and who has shared his pride as a member of the Métis community through his stories.”
The Call for Proposals for WILU 2011 is now officially closed. The Deadline was December 17, 2010. The Program Subcommittee will begin deliberating on all the submissions soon and hope to respond to everyone by the end of January.
In case you are wondering… we have a blind reviewing process in place: one person has been responsible for receiving all of the submissions and will enter them onto spreadsheets with identifying information removed. The Program Subcommittee will then review these spreadsheets. We hope this will ensure a fair decision-making process.

Workshop for Instruction in Library Use (WILU) 2011 – ‘Learning Under Living Skies’
June 1-3, 2011
Regina, Saskatchewan
The tri-institutional WILU Committee from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST), the University of Regina, and the University of Saskatchewan invites you to submit proposals to be considered for presentation at WILU 2011. We are very pleased and excited to bring WILU to our province – for the first time ever!
This is also a special year because this will be the 40th annual WILU! Over the decades, it has grown to encompass all aspects of library instruction and the emerging role of librarians as educators. Please visit About WILU 2011 for more information.
The sky looms large over Saskatchewan. It is bold, active and constantly changing – just like learning in libraries. And, as we all know, learning can happen anywhere…the sky’s the limit…
Suggested Topics:
Learning Spaces. Tell us about where learning takes place.
Who Learns? Tell us about who learns from you.
Today’s Tools. Tell us about the tools you use.
Why Teach? Tell us what motivates you to educate others.
Session Types:
Session Presentation
45-minute sessions, preferably grounded in formal research or applied practice, which include a 35-minute presentation and 10-minute discussion or question period.
Lightning Strike Session (with a Display Poster)
5-minute “quick hit” presentations on any topic related to information literacy or library instruction. A poster must accompany the presentation to create a lightning strike display circuit for all attendees.
Hands-on Tools
45-minute or 90-minute computer lab sessions where participants can interact with various online or electronic tools. There are four 24-seat computer labs available for WILU 2011. Other smaller computer labs are available as needed.
Submission Information:
Please submit proposals by December 17, 2010 through the Online Submission Form (you may also submit your proposal directly by email following these instructions).
The primary contact on the proposal will be notified by the end of January 2011 as to whether or not the proposal has been accepted for presentation. Note: proposals will only be reviewed by the committee after all information regarding the presenter’s name and institution has been excluded.

The 40th annual WILU 2011 conference will be held in Regina, Saskatchewan Wednesday June 1 to Friday June 3, 2011.
The Workshop for Instruction in Library (WILU) is an annual conference devoted to bringing together the latest research and innovations in the area of information literacy and library instruction. WILU 2011 will be jointly hosted by the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST), the University of Regina, and the University of Saskatchewan.
