Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Monitoring System

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is supporting the development of a new Canadian Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Monitoring System. This system will increase our understanding of MS patterns in Canada and will provide information on disability, treatments, health outcomes, and quality of life. Enhancing the availability of accurate information on chronic diseases is an Agency priority and MS is the most common neurological disease affecting adults in Canada. An estimated 55,000 – 75,000 Canadians have MS.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

A Collaborative effort

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) (External link) External link will develop the monitoring system, working in collaboration with the Canadian Network of Multiple Sclerosis Clinics (External link) External link and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada (External link) External link. CIHI is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides essential information on Canada’s health system and the health of Canadians. CIHI’s experience and expertise in data system design will ensure that the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Monitoring System is built according to high quality data collection standards and that the information provided is relevant to the needs of those diagnosed with MS and their health care providers.

Developing the Monitoring System

To design the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Monitoring System, CIHI will work with clinicians and technical experts from across Canada, representatives from among those with MS, and provincial and territorial governments The Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Monitoring System will help MS, health care professionals, researchers, policy makers, and Canadians better understand MS and its impact on Canadians.
