The Public Health Agency of Canada and Health Canada today released the Lessons Learned Review: Public Health Agency of Canada and Health Canada Response to the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic.

This report is part of our ongoing effort to apply lessons learned to future pandemic planning. It identifies strengths and areas for improvement in our response to the H1N1 pandemic.

NOTE TO EDITORS - July 31, 2010

The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is advising Canadians to avoid eating the cooked ready-to-eat meat products manufactured by G. Brandt Meat Products Ltd. listed in the CFIA recall notice External site.

The only illnesses associated to date with Brandt products have been caused by Salmonella Chester in Freybe brand headcheese.

If you have any of the listed Brandt meat products in your home or if you do not know if the products you have were manufactured by Brandt, do not eat them. Throw them out instead.

People who have eaten Brandt meat products and feel unwell should contact a health professional. The most common symptoms of food-borne illness include:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Neck stiffness

Avoiding eating these products is especially important for Canadians at high risk of getting seriously ill from food-borne illness:

  • People 60 years and older.
  • Very young children.
  • People with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatment or who have HIV/AIDS or other chronic medical conditions.
  • Pregnant women, due to risk of harm to the fetus.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) today released Life with Arthritis in Canada: A Personal and Public Health Challenge.

This is the first national surveillance report on arthritis to be released by PHAC and was prepared in collaboration with The Arthritis Society of Canada, Arthritis Consumer Experts, Canadian Arthritis Network, Arthritis Community Research and Evaluation Unit, Canadian Arthritis Patients Alliance, Statistics Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

More than 4.2 million Canadians live with arthritis and the number is expected to climb as the population ages. The Government of Canada invested more than $20.5 million in arthritis-related research in 2009-10 and continues to work with key stakeholders on ways to prevent the disease and provide a better quality of life for those afflicted.
