Promises capital gains exemption for fishing assets and an increased role for provinces in fisheries
Today at a tour stop in St. John’s, Stephen Harper announced his detailed plan for fisheries.
“Only our party will pay attention to the needs of communities that depend on fishing – a traditional industry that remains vital to Canadian prosperity,” said Mr. Harper. “Canada needs a government for all Canadians from coast to coast, a government that gives you the action you want on your priorities.”
Details of the plan include:
-
Scrapping the capital gains tax when $500,000 in fishing equipment is transferred within a family
- Increase provincial responsibilities for management of fisheries.
- Investing more in fisheries science and research;
- Establishing an independent judicial inquiry into the collapse of sockeye salmon stocks in the Fraser River;
- Moving towards extending the 200-mile limit to the edge of the Continental Shelf, the nose and tail of the Grand Banks, and the Flemish Cap in the North Atlantic and exercising Canadian custodial management over this area; and
- Reinstating local marine and aviation forecasting at the Gander Weather Centre.
We need a government that will stand up for all Canadians, including fishermen. Only a Conservative government will take our fisheries seriously. Stephen Harper will stand up for workers who depend on fishing and will give more control over the fisheries to our fishermen.
