Harper: Liberals who blew $100 million on Adscam don’t trust parents with $100 a month for kids
WINDSOR – Conservative leader Stephen Harper attacked the “beer and popcorn” comments of the Prime Minister’s communications director Scott Reid and the weak Liberal attempts to excuse the remarks.
“The prime minister’s top aides said that parents would blow the conservative child care allowance on ‘beer and popcorn,’” said Harper. “That may be what the Liberals really think about Canadian families, but the parents I know believe that nothing – nothing – is more important than their children.”
Referring to Reid’s attempts to apologize for his remarks as “a dumb way to make my point,” Harper said, “The Liberals still don’t get it. It wasn’t the way he made the point, it was the point he was making: that government knows better, and cares more, for your children than you do.”
Harper said the incident was indicative of the Liberal approach to child care. “Paul Martin says that child care money shouldn’t go to parents. He says it should go to ‘experts’ who know what’s best for children. Well I believe that there are already millions of child care experts in this country, and their names are ‘mom’ and ‘dad’!”
“Just imagine, the Liberals who blew $100 million dollars on Adscam don’t trust parents with $100 dollars per month for their children,” said Harper.
