Before the pioneers came,
Wolseley was called Wolf Creek, because wolves and coyotes frequented the
creek that ran through the town. When the pioneers arrived, they
wanted to change the town's name. They chose to name the town
after Lord Wolseley because he had fought in many wars and was recruited
by Canada to help end the Riel Rebellion at Batoche.
The Rebellion had already
ended by the time Lord Wolseley and
his army arrived on the scene. Lord Wolseley was still considered
a prominent person in society thus fitting to name the town after him.
