A Pioneer of Kynoch

Matthias Trivers was both a foundation and a pillar of the community of Kynoch. Since his arrival in 1888, he helped with the production of agricultural goods, and continued to do so until the 1970's, when his old age finally began to catch up with him.

Matthias' father originally came to the area in the mid-1880's to work on the railway which was being built from Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury. He and William Watson both must have been pleased with the area, for they continued to return, and began building homes for themselves. In 1888, they finally sent for their families to come and live with them.

The first few years in Kynoch were hard for Matthias and his family, but they persisted and continued to harvest the land. In 1908 Matthias married Mary MacAulay.

For his whole life Matthias worked on the farm harvesting, planting, doing any jobs that needed to be done. He also helped with the making of maple syrup every year, until he reached his early 90's.

Matthias Trivers was known and loved throughout the community of Kynoch. His many relatives and friends would often visit him, reminiscing of the days gone by. In 1971, with his memory still as good as ever, Matthias was surrounded by friends and family to celebrate his 90th birthday. Another large party was held for his 95th birthday, in 1976. Matthias Trivers died in 1980's?, after contributing a great deal to the community of Kynoch, and leaving behind many people who loved and admired him.
