Cardigan Clippers
Cardigan Ball Field
The Cardigan Clippers joined the league in 1991 and have been a strong, dominant team ever since. They have won championships in 1996, ‘97, ‘98, 2000, 2001, and won regular season playoffs in 1991, ‘92, and ‘99. 1998 Championship Photo The starting line up in 1991 was as follows: Centerfielder- Troy Ferguson, Catcher- John Carmichael, 3rd basemen- Preston Conohan, Leftfielder- Ross Perry, Short-stop- Tony Roche, Rightfielder- Alonzo Blaisdale, 2nd basemen- Ivan Hughes, 1st basemen- Reg Conohan, and the coach and pitcher- John Allan Hughes. The team also housed Eugene Hughes, Keith Roche, Craig Conohan, Quen Johnston, and Parnell Hughes. John Allan has been with the team for the past ten years. The players that committed themselves this year to the Clippers are: Ryan MacDonald, Ian MacDonald, Carter MacIssac, Joe Gardiner, Steve MacLean, Perry Birt, Dave Gillis, Quen Johnston, Cameron MacMaster, Andrew Phelan, Craig Conohan, Ryan Garrett, Jason MacLean, Francis Shepard, Nick Thompson, Mitchell Yorston, John Allan Hughes, and Lionel Sanderson. Many of the team members throughout the years have been presented with numerous trophies and awards.
The clippers' fans are just as important as the team members themselves. Alfred Walsh, to name one, never missed a home game and loved to do his own coaching from behind the fence, along the first base sidelines. He was a devoted, well-respected man in his community. His passing in 1999 has left the clippers with fond memories of his beneficial baseball strategies. Harriet Hughes, a life long baseball fan, had six of her sons play in the KCBL, some of which are still members. She ventured to every home game, and could be heard over the crowd cheering on her team. Her grandson Nial Hughes, who got his feet wet in the KCBL, was scouted in 1997 to play for the LA Dodgers Division "A" team. He signed a three-year contract with them in 1998. Though the Cardigan Clippers are a competitive and dynamic force, they are dedicated to their team, and love to play ball. They will continue to be a major driving force in the King County Baseball League.
