There are no records of these early precinct or short-term plans having been reviewed by Carleton officials. In general, recorded discussion concerning "master plans" or long-range physical planning issues finds topics focussed on immediate problems such as changing faculty requirements, budget restrictions, or obtaining a site plan of the extant site (showing buildings, services and trees). Most of the early short-term and partial master plans seem to have followed the conceptual intent as delineated earlier.

The earliest of the more detailed and long-range precinct plans which began to modify the campus layout as proposed in the approved plan dates from 1958. By the summer of 1958 several alternative schemes were delineated by the Architectural Associates for the athletic precinct, to the east between the railway and Bronson Avenue.

The images above and to the left contain examples of those layouts which illustrate extensive water features, a stadium, numerous courts and practice fields and four or five hectares devoted to staff housing.

Soon after, several alternative schemes were delineated for the site north of the bywash, between the canal and railway tracks. In 1959 this area, sometimes referred to as the "north extension", was proposed for two or three times more student residences than had been called for in the approved plan. Two examples of those residential layouts are included in the images provided on this page.
