Today's campus development proposals are not without need of critical comment. They tend to focus on long-term capital construction and gloss over issues of short-term or localized enhancement. Perhaps the strongest criticism needs to be aimed at those individuals entrusted with the future of this place. The past 38 years have not witnessed an apparent desire to have a master plan. Beginning with the strong-minded views of J.E. Coyne in the mid-1950s, Carleton officials have tended to favour plans which are not intended to be followed. At best they have been seen as something which might "appeal to the public" (building committee, Feb. 1955). At worst they have been almost immediately set aside and not again consulted.
