The concepts of person, cultural landscape, and institution are brought together in the comment by Dr. Farquhar, President of Carleton University (1992): "We are a relatively young place...". This type of conceptual fusion is often repeated, as "we are a size... with a strong sense of community...", suggesting further evidence of the links between people and place.

Concern for these relationships exists on two primary levels. First, this place is part of our day-to-day environment which helps to mould us even as we help mould it. We are concerned because to some degree we and this place are part of a larger whole. Second, studying and understanding these relationships within an academic framework helps students, professors and other staff who might seck to improve the physical environment. On this second level of concern, people-place relationships come into focus.
