The Fort Yard Gates



"On the Western front opposite were two large gates painted red with small doors for use when the large gates were locked at night."

There was watchman attached to the fort, Kanka, whose duties were to lock and unlock the gates, to ring the bell for rising, for meals, and for divine service on Sundays. He paraded the fort during the night, and at stated intervals would call out "All's Well"."
