Expectations:
Students will:

  • use the Internet as a research tool
  • locate countries using an atlas
  • mark the places on a map where Canadians served
  • speculate on causes and effects
  • define term: Italian Campaign


Preparation:

  • Ensure that Internet access is available for first half of period.
  • Have several atlases for students to share.
  • Have blank maps of the world for each student.

Lesson Plan:

  1. Students will use the Courage Remembered ("War Graves Commission") and also the Canadian Military Medals Digital Collections to make a list of places where Canadian forces fought.
  2. Using atlases, students locate these countries and shade them in on a blank map of the world to demonstrate the global nature of the war and Canada's contribution.
  3. Students add to their "World War II Glossary":
    • Italian Campaign
  4. Teacher wraps up exercise by leading a whole class brainstorming session asking, "Why do you think the war spread to some of these places?" Remaining time can be used to ask, "Which branch of the armed forces is not represented here?" and introduce role of Royal Canadian Navy for both military and convoy duties.

Evaluation Opportunities:

  • completion mark for map.
  • informal assessment of participation in brainstorm exercise (time permitting).

Where Did Canadian Soldiers Fight in World War II?

Colour in all countries where Canadians were sent during the war.
