Expectations:
Students will:

  • use the Internet as a research tool.
  • form generalizations based on an individual's personal history.
  • summarize a personal history in proper sentence form.
  • use the computer for word processing.
  • critically discuss the need for secrecy during wartime (time permitting).
  • define term: telegram (cablegram).
Preparation:
  • Ensure that Internet access is available for the entire period OR print out the Boulet letters and distribute among students.
  • Ensure that all computers have word processing capabilities, including printing.

Lesson Plan:

  1. Each student will read the letters written by J.E. Boulet, found in Digital Collections.
  2. Each student will create a newspaper obituary for Boulet, outlining some of the highlights of his wartime experience and aspects of his personality.  You may want to consult your local newspaper or the Globe and Mail Lives Lived Section for examples of obituaries.
  3. Each student will then type the obituary on computer in a newspaper-style format (large headline, columns, and a readable font).
  4. Students add to their "World War II Glossary":
    • telegram (cablegram)
  5. Remaining time can be spent in a class discussion about the telegram sent to Boulet's family. What did the telegram say? What information was left? Why might that information not be included?

Evaluation Opportunities:

  • process mark for rough draft of obituary.
  • mark for a typed obituary.
  • participation in class discussion (time permitting).

Content makes inadequate reference to Boulet's experiences and character some references but incomplete; fails to tell reader enough about Boulet both experiences and personality are solidly based on Boulet's letters very complete re-telling of Boulet's life and character; makes creative inferences as well
