Taking Care of the Environment: Greenhills Water Quality and Drainage Control |
Reclamation of post-mining areas6What is reclamation? Reclamation returns all the areas of land that have been disturbed or changed by mining operations back into forests and wildlife areas. At the Greenhills Mine, a lot of time and money is spent on research, environmental monitoring, water-quality control and reclamation activities to protect local plants and wildlife.
When the mines reclaim land they need to make it the same as, or better than it was before mining occurred. Specific reclamation activities include recontouring and revegetating waste dumps, roads and other disturbed areas with native grasses and trees. Greenhills' close proximity to the Fording River Mine and its on-site greenhouse provide the mine with coniferous and deciduous seedlings for use in these reclamation activities.
