Grade 5: BC Communities and Their Resources

Extensions

  • Ask students to access the websites http://www.wellsbc.com/communityhall/ and http://www.tbc.gov.bc.ca/culture/schoolnet/drawings/sites/site1/1describ.html to explore how the community of Wells is trying to remember its past by adapting a historic building to serve its present needs. Ask them to share their findings with the class.
  • Classes in areas with easy access to the towns focused on in this lesson would ideally arrange to visit the heritage locations and museums in the towns. Preparation prior to the excursion and debriefing after it are necessary for a successful visit.
  • From conventional print sources and/or from on-line sources ask students to compose "biographies" of one of the towns focused on in this lesson. The "biographies" should be illustrated with maps and photographs. For illustrations, direct them to explore the on-line resource BC Archives: Visual Record: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/visual/visual.htm.
