Attawapiskat reserve is located within the boundaries described in the James Bay Treaty of
1905. It is located on the shores of James Bay along the Attawapiskat River.
It was originally a Hudsons Bay Company Trading Outpost during the fur trade. The
reserve was settled by the Native people who hunted and fished in the area. The reserve
boundaries were approved and confirmed in the 1929-1930 Adhesions to Treaty No. 9.
Attawapiskat was officially established in 1964. The present population is now 1,128.
There is an article regarding the Native soldiers from Attawapiskat published in the
Wawatay Newpaper. It is available in the Articles section of this website. |
