On September 12, 1875, an Adhesion to Treaty No. 3 was signed between the government and
the Metis people of Rainy Lake and Rainy River. The reserve lands allocated to these
people comprise what is now the Couchiching Reserve. It was originally inhabited by
the Saulteaux Ojibway people in an area covered by the Northwest Angle Treaty of
1873-Treaty No.3.The Couchiching Reserve did not come into being until 1967 when it was
established on the site of the former Indian Agency. First Nation members include
the descendants of local Metis who were absorbed into the Little Eagle Band and they are
now a part of the Couchiching First Nation.
It is very impressive that an area with such a small population would contribute so many
of its young men to the war effort.
