Frenchman's Head was established on the shores of the Lac Seul. The community forms part
of Lac Seul First Nation whose residents originally inhabited the surrounding region. In
the late 18th Century Frenchman's Head was established as a Hudson's Bay Company fur trade
post. In 1873, the areas inhabited by the Ojibway people became part of the
Northwest Angle Treaty - Treaty No. 3 to form the Lac Seul reserve. In 1882, the
area was surveyed by the Ontario Government. Frenchman's Head was confirmed by the
Ontario government in 1915. Currently, the estimated combined populations of Lac
Seul, Frenchman's Head, and Kejick Bay which form Lac Seul is 603. |
