The Cree people who primarily lived along the shores of the James Bay coast and the Moose
River were the original inhabitants of this area. In 1673, the Hudson's Bay Company
established a fur trade post on this site. Over the course of time, the Cree people
became involved in the fur trade and were commonly referred to as the "Home
Guard" by the traders. This name was given to the Cree people for defending the
trading posts and for providing provisions. |
