The Red Rock- Lake Helen Reserve is approximately one mile northeast of the junction of
Highways #11 and #17 on Trans-Canada Highway #11. The reserve is 11/2 miles north of the
Town of Nipigon. The C.P.R main line and a C.N.R. spur line pass by here. They have an
access road running through the reserve from Highway #11.
The Red Rock First nation was firts established as a Hudson's Bay Trading Post at the
mouth of the Nipigon River in 1821 and remained open for the next 44 years. In the 1950s a
number of Indian people began to live on Crown Land in the area. The area adjacent to
MacDiarmid was full of seasonal employment opportunities. What is now the Red Rock-Lake
Helen Reserve is within the boundaries described by the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850,
and received official reserve status in the late 1960s. |
