Sioux Lookout is located on Pelican Lake on the English River system, and is connected to
the Trans-Canada Highway which is 65 km to the south by Highway 72. It is located on the
Canadian
National railway with Winnipeg 350 km to the west, and Thunder Bay 370 km to the
southwest. Between 1953 and 1987, the Pinetree Radar Base was one of the major employees
in town,
however the base was closed in 1987.
History
The population of Sioux Lookout is about 3400 with another 1800 people living within a few
miles of the Town's boundaries. North of Sioux Lookout there are 23 native communities
with a total
population of 15,000. Most of these communities are accessible only by air and Sioux
Lookout acts as their service centre.
The town's name comes from a mountain which, in the late 1700's, was used by Ojibway
Indians to watch for Sioux warriors who were expected to ambush their camp. As it
happened, the Ojibway
did the ambushing and killed all but one of the Sioux.
Sioux Lookout is home to an incredibly resourceful Newspaper in Wawatay News.
The region falls under the Treaty No.3 area. |
