By the end of Stage 1 a learner understands that language can be ordered, structured and captured graphically to make meaning. Learner understands some uses of writing and is familiar with basic mechanics at the level of letter and word.

At this stage a learner

  • importance placed on the written word in Canadian society, e.g. leases, contracts, government understands the correspondence
  • understands the difference between written language and oral language
  • is able to tell a story orally

Mechanics

  • can hold a pen or pencil
  • traces and copies shapes
  • traces and copies letters
  • matches letters and shapes
  • forms some letters

Convention

  • knows where to write on the page and on the line
  • understands use of space between letters and between words

Text Type and Styles

  • understands that writing is used for a variety of
  • purposes, e.g. reminders, giving information, formalizing an agreement
  • familiar with idea of writing for different purposes

Writing Strategies

  • writes for accuracy in forming letters and some words
  • uses invented spelling

Metacognitive Strategies

  • checks written work for accuracy
  • asks instructor questions when does not understand
