By the end of Stage 2 a learner understands uses of writing and is familiar with mechanics of writing at the level of words and sentence. Learner is focussed on the mechanics of writing and is not yet writing for her own purposes

At this stage a learner:

Mechanics

  • forms letters, both upper and lower case
  • writes all letters of alphabet, upper and lower case
  • writes high frequency words
  • completes simple personal information forms
  • copies from the blackboard
  • writes short personal stories using invented spelling

Conventions

  • uses simple punctuation: period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, apostrophe
  • is becoming familiar with different types of sentences: statement, question, exclamation, simple instruction
  • uses some basic spelling conventions, including word families and silent letters

Text Type and Styles

  • recognizes and writes: first person narrative, lists, simple personal information on forms

Writing Strategies

  • plans before writing by using notes, thinking of sequence of events
  • selects "best word"
  • "brainstorms" with other learners to develop ideas

Metacognitive Strategies

  • organizes words into personal dictionary
  • checks own word using personal dictionary
  • begins to take notes to remember information
