General description:

  • Learner is able to read one page of authentic text, mostly of factual nature, within a familiar, mostly predictable, practical and relevant context of daily life and experience.
  • Often requires re-reading and clarification, mainly because of "journalese" style vocabulary, unknown idioms or cultural references.
  • Unfamiliar words in unpredictable contexts are hard to guess - the learner uses a bilingual dictionary from time to time, although can use a concise unilingual one.
  • Learner reads in English for information, to learn the language and to develop reading skills but begins to read simple articles and stories for pleasure.
  • Language is mostly concrete, factual and literal but vocabulary items on abstract ideas become frequent. The difficulty level of text is such that the learner recognizes many words as her/his active or passive oral repertoire, but many words are unknown to the learner from the context of oral discourse.
  • Can find specific, more detailed information by scanning the text, simple charts or tables, in maps and directories.
  • Can read silently for meaning but reads slowly
  • Can recall two-thirds of the information without looking at the text.
