Welcoming Life Mi'kmaq Narration

During spring and early summer the ancient village of Metepenagiag hummed with activity. People celebrated the new season as the river teemed with spawning fish and cooking pots were filled with tender greens and fresh salmon.

Early Mi'kmaq Life

Metepenagiag was not only an excellent fishing location but it was also conveniently located between the interior forests and the coast. In winter hunting parties traveled only a short distance to find some of the best wintering areas for deer, moose and caribou. In the fall coastal marshes yielded migrating ducks and geese and in spring coastal islands provided a rich supply of bird eggs. Wild grains, fruits and vegetables were gathered from areas closer to home. Although much fresh food was eaten, preserving was also an important activity.
