It has been my aim to establish the places of origin of French Newfoundlanders, and without being able to provide very precise details, it is possible to say that most Acadians came from Cape Breton Island, and that most of the peninsular French have more or less strong ties with Brittany and, directly or indirectly, with St. Pierre. But it is even more important to ask why a number of French fishermen should choose to start a new life in an isolated and inhospitable part of Newfoundland, rather than return to France. Once again, I shall make use of the little available documentation and oral tradition in considering this question.
