Have you ever wanted to design your dream house?  What kind of house would it be?  Would it be a large house, or small and cosy?  Would you like to land a helicopter on the roof?

In this activity, you'll learn a few things about architecture and the words architects use.  You will then design your house.   What do you want your house to look like?

Plans of Roedde House
These are the floor plans of Roedde House.  You can use them as they are or print it out, cut it up, and redesign the house!

Vocabulary

architect -- a person who designs buildings and oversees their construction

blueprints -- a set of different types of technical drawings, drawn to scale, named after the original copying process that produced the prints in white lines on blue paper

scale -- one of the external faces of a building; also, an architect's drawing of a facade, set out to scale

section -- an enlargement or increase in detail in a particular

elevation -- various views of the building set in plans, giving architects a look at what the finished product might look like

plan -- also known as blueprints, these can also be rough sketches

Draw

Okay, now here is where you use your imagination for your house!  First, draw a detailed picture of the house you live in with your parents, sisters, brothers, or your grandparents.   How tall is it?  How many floors?  Where are the doors and windows?   Is your made of brick, wood, or something else?  Think of these things before you finish your drawing.

When you finish your first drawing, think about what kind of drawing it is.   Is it a sketch?  Is it a drawing with a lot of detail?  Show your friends and get their opinions.
